| German Shepherd Dog Forequarter |
 |
|
The German shepherd dog is a trotting dog. It is to be noted that trotting creates similar jolts or shock as in
jumping, although relatively milder, and it is hence desirable to have perfect
angulation of forequarter. Well angulated and strongly built forequarters are
essentially necessary for any working or trotting breed like for German Shepherd
Dogs. Responsible breeders tend to put special emphasize on forequarter of the
dog, which is invariably the most important part of scientific breeding for
breed development. When we talk about the forequarters or fore assembly, we talk
about the shoulder blade, upper arm, forearm, metacarpus or fetlock, and the
forepaw. the skeleton is formed by the shoulder blade (scapula), humerus, radius
with the ulna, the bones of the metacarpus and the toes(phalenges).
The shoulder blades are long and obliquely angled, laid on flat and not placed forward. The upper arm joins the shoulder blade at about a right angle. Both the upper arm and the shoulder blade are well muscled. The
forelegs, viewed from all sides, are straight and the bone oval rather than round. The pasterns are strong and springy and angulated at approximately a 25-degree angle from the vertical. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be
removed, but are normally left on. The feet are short, compact with toes well arched, pads thick and firm, nails short and dark. |

| The German Shepherd dog is a "trotter", he must be able to gait (trot) for long stretches with minimum effort. |
