| German shepherd heat cycle |
 |
A German shepherd female normally will go
into her "heat cycle" twice a year. The first heat cycle typically occurs
between the age of 5 to 14 months. The age at which the female will start
their cycles and the duration of the heat cycle differs greatly on
each individual dog. A normal heat cycle can last 1 to 21 days (from
start to finish), how-ever, the mating phase is most likely between 12 to 21
days (estrus period).
There is four stages to the German shepherd heat cycle. Proestrus, Estrus,
Metestrus (or Diestrus) and Anestrus.
1. Proestrus: A vaginal discharge (light red color bleeding can become heavy
as the heat cycle porgreses) in which the males will be attracted to females
but the female is reluctant to mate at this early phase. This could could
last around 4-20 days.
2.
Estrus: (getting ready to
breed phase): A swollen vulva with yellowish vaginal
discharge. The mating happens during this phase. This could last around 5 to
13 days.
3. Metestrus: (or Diestrus): This is the period right after mating (estrus).
Usually, if the female is pregnant, the pregnancy
can take anywhere from 57 days to 65 days. At Gunbil German shepherds, we
normally start from the first day of mating to a 63 days whelping schedule
(period).
4. Anestrus: This is the dormancy period (sexual and hormonal) between
estrus phases. This normally can be between 2 to 3 months.

| |
| The getting ready to breed phase (estrus) can vary from
female to female in accepting the male for mating , this depends on the
ndividual females desire to mate and her time period. |
